The Alert Program

“How Does Your Engine Run?®”

The Alert Program is a program designed to help children learn to monitor, maintain and change their levels of alertness so that it is appropriate to a situation or task. This 10-week program consists of a series of lessons and activities that incorporate sensory integration techniques with cognitive approaches in order to:

  • Teach children, parents, and teachers how to recognize arousal states as they relate to attention, learning and behavior.
  • Help children recognize and expand the number of self-regulation strategies they use in a variety of tasks and settings, including identifying their own sensorimotor preferences.
  • Help parents and teachers understand that behavior may reflect both the current level of organization of the nervous system and the student’s best attempt to respond adaptively and efficiently to the demands of a situation or task.
